Providence Health & Services Music Thanatologist - Pastoral Care in Olympia, Washington

Providence is calling a Music Thanatologist to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.

Provides live voice and harp prescriptive "Music of Compassion" vigils to critically and terminally ill patients throughout the continuum of care. Provides for clinical and spiritual comfort by planning and implementing music vigils for patients and their families. Ministers in partnership with Spiritual Care team, Palliative Care team members and other care providers; assists in providing for the needs of the terminally ill and their families. Performs all duties in a manner consistent with the team's expectations and reflects the Providence Health and Services Mission and Core Values. Candidates must be able to provide their own harp for use in this position.

In this position you will:

  • Ministers effectively and compassionately to the terminal, dying and palliative care patients and their families in the patient's hospital room or hospice setting using harp and voiceProvide music-thanatology ministry in settings of intense grief and pending loss and respond to needs within the context of the vigil.

  • Demonstrate musical reliability, consistency, and proficiency in voice and harp delivery at the bedside.

  • Provide service for patients in the process of withdrawing of life support.

  • Demonstrate ability to witness and be present to the dying process, particularly the natural grieving process, as encountered in the music vigil

  • Documents music vigils in patient's chart and in appropriate records as required.

  • Recognizes and responds to cultural and religious diversity of patients.

  • Functions and serves collaboratively as a member of the Spiritual Care team and interdisciplinary health care teams, participating in programs, consultations, referrals and meetings as appropriate

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelors degree preferred

  • Graduate of music-thanatology training approved by Music-Thanatology Association International preferred.

  • Ability to provide own harp

  • Strong written and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to actively listen and project an open, respectful, non-judgmental attitude toward all people

  • Knowledge of the medical, spiritual and psycho-social issues related to terminal illness, death and bereavement

  • Ability to play vigils for terminal, dying and palliative patients and their families in the patient's hospital room

  • Certification by MTAI (Music-Thanatology Association International) r equired within two years of hire , which includes proficiency in harp, voice and the prescriptive process.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Masters degree

  • Certification as a Music Thanatologist from Music Thanatology Association International or Chalice of Repose Project
