Providence Health & Services Infection Control Preventionist in Olympia, Washington

Description:

Providence is calling an Infection Control Preventionist (1.0 FTE, Days) to work in Quality Assurance at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington.

The Infection Control Preventionist performs functions that support the Southwest Washington Region and medical staff to continually improve processes and patient care, to reduce the risk of hospital acquired infections. This role performs ongoing and systematic assessment for infection control issues by making regular unit rounds, reviewing microbiological, clinical, and other data based on a surveillance program with established and approved criteria.

In this position you will:

  • Perform ongoing and systematic assessment and surveillance for infection control issues:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Infection Control principles and practices and applies them in surveillance activities.

  • Demonstrates ability to use computer software and programs to support surveillance activities.

  • Performs regular unit rounds, and reviews microbiological, clinical, and other data.

  • Demonstrates understanding of the significance of microbiology results in relation to clinical syndromes.

  • Demonstrates ability to institute any appropriate control measures or studies when there is risk to any patient or personnel.

  • Provide infection prevention and control education to staff through new employee orientation, annual updates, special programs and courses based on organizational needs. Serves as liaison to staff for best practices, problem solving and crisis management related to infection prevention and control:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles.

  • Demonstrates ability to develop education plans, objectives, and curriculum and evaluation methods.

  • Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of current CDC, APIC guidelines as well as regulatory and accrediting body’s requirements.

  • Perform clinical reviews, using epidemiological methods and National Safety Healthcare Network (NHSN) criteria:

  • Knowledge of process improvement principles, epidemiology, and research methodologies.

  • Knowledge of current NHSN definitions.

  • Review infection control policies and procedures at least every two years, update, and make recommendations to the Infection Control Committee for changes:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and epidemiology theories and processes.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of current CDC, APIC guidelines as well as regulatory and accrediting body’s requirements.

  • Support risk management specialist and Quality Services staff to identify and resolve risk issues and sentinel events related to infection control:

  • Demonstrates ability to perform chart review.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of infection control and epidemiology theories and processes.

  • Demonstrates ability to research new and emerging trends in infection control.

  • Leads organization in readiness activities to maintain compliance with Joint Commission standard for Surveillance, Infection Prevention and Control:

  • Demonstrates thorough working knowledge of Joint Commission standards.

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrates ability to assist in the implementation of interventions or process changes as needed to maintain compliance.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Medicine, Microbiology, Epidemiology, or other related public health field or equivalent educ/experience

  • Trained for Hazardous Materials and Waste Management

  • 3 years of experience in a hospital or relevant health care setting

  • CIC or within two years of hire

  • If a Registered Nurse, Current Washington State Licensure as a Registered Nurse

Preferred qualification for this position include:

  • Master's degree in Nursing, Health Administration, or other public health field
