The chaplain is an ordained or lay minister of spiritual integrity. The chaplain, as a member of the health care team, is directly responsible for the implementation of the mission, values, policies and procedures of the department of Spiritual Care. A chaplain offers holistic ministry which addresses the spiritual, religious, emotional and sacramental needs to patients, families and caregivers. The chaplain provides a ministry of presence, seeking to embody compassion and to promote healing as they accompany individuals and families on their journey through illness, and at times, through death.
In this position you will:
Demonstrate and model Providence's Mission and Core Values of dignity, justice, compassion, excellence and integrity to customers, caregivers, and visitors; and provides quality compassionate service in the performance of work assignments and responsibilities
Customer Service: Maintain and promote positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with patients, providers, visitors and caregivers. Provide high quality service through assessment and evaluates patient needs for spiritual and emotional care.
Develop an appropriate plan to enhance whole person care for patient and their family on the assessment/reassessment and initiates or recommends services to meet those needs. Integrate the plan of care into interdisciplinary plan of care and documents all interventions in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR)
Chaplain are available to assist those with grief support and ministry, in addition to provide those mourning with appropriate and current resources
Facilitate the assessment and understanding of religious development, spiritual practices and resources of the patient/individual
Required qualifications for this position include:
Master's Degree (M. Div. and/or M.A.) from an accredited college, seminary, university or theological institute in theology, spirituality, ministry, or closely related field or equivalent educ/experience
At least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education approved by Director of Spiritual Care Services
Training in communication skills, referral/resource opportunities, documentation ( e.g. charting, spiritual assessment)
2 years successful clinical and/or pastoral experience in healthcare setting or other ministerial service
Members of the spiritual care team will have the appropriate professional credentials for their role. Chaplains are certified and maintain certification with the National Assn. Of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), The Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), American Assn. Of Pastoral Counselors, or meet the requirements of their faith community for Chaplain and are ordained and/or have completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education
A person who is hired without certification and who qualifies will complete the process within two years from the date of their hire. Chaplains hired without four units of Clinical Pastoral Education will complete four units by the second anniversary of their date of hire, unless they certified in an earlier process.
Some positions may require a drivers abstract indicating a valid Washington State Drivers license in good standing.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- 4 years successful clinical and/or pastoral experience in healthcare setting or other ministerial service
