The Medical Laboratory Technician II is responsible for technical Medical Laboratory Technician bench duties within the laboratory, for the assigned section(s). The position performs routine and complex tests in any of these potential sections (as assigned): Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Molecular, and Immunohematology. The position has responsibility for planning, performing and evaluating laboratory testing analysis; and establishing and/or maintaining communications with physicians, patients, other hospital personnel, professional associations, and other organizations.

BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS •1) Technical Requirements •a) Performs and evaluates laboratory testing and analysis. •i) evaluates and responds appropriately to any sample integrity issues; •ii) monitors instrument performance; •iii) performs analysis in a timely manner, per the priority of the order; •iv) assesses results properly, based on gender/age of patient; •v) reports results interpretations to clients, following SOP’s for test result documentation. •vi) Maintains currency with all competency and assigned SOP review for the section(s) assigned. •vii) Is able to engage productively in evaluation of quality improvement opportunities •viii) Is able to perform routine data analysis, as requested. •b) Coordinates and performs data entry and related LIS operations. •i) overseeing patient order/cancellation; •ii) troubleshooting LIS related functions. •c) Performs instrument maintenance according to protocol •i) Identifies and troubleshoots any instrument problems •d) Performs Quality Control procedures and related tasks. •i) Documents according to SOP •ii) Identifies and responds to any QC that is not as expected •e) Complies with facility and unit specific infection control, risk management and OSHA guidelines and procedures. •i) Is familiar with use of PPE and uses properly, per SOP •ii) Completes all required yearly HealthStream education in a timely manner (including, but not limited to: fire and electrical safety, compliance, workplace violence, SDS, security) •f) Willingly contributes to teamwork within the workgroup •i) Responds to questions from other staff or caregivers about test procedures and/or alternatives and reporting test results and exceptions. •ii) Maintains expected workflow (turnaround) for testing at the bench assigned •iii) Assists others as workload allows •iv) Assist in orientation of new employees •2) Performs other duties as assigned •a) May be asked to participate in a special project •i) Follows guidelines at time of assignment, and prioritizes workload to ensure timely completion of assignment.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Associate's Degree Life Science Or
Coursework/Training completion of an accredited two (2) year technical MLT program, including clinical rotations.
2 years as an MLT
proficiency in at least 3 of the position summary section assignments.
Possesses strong technical aptitude
Ability to analyze and interpret financial data
Demonstrated written communication skills
Strong verbal communication and listening skills
Performs work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work within tight timeframes and meet strict deadlines
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
